Crocodile conservation in action!
Dr. Alison Leslie

If exotic travel and scientific research gets your blood moving, then this might be the Earth Day activity for you. Earth watch Institute matches up volunteer travelers with field researchers who need hands-on help. You'll pay your own way, but it'll be worth every penny when you experince nature—and lend a hand—like you've never done before.

Earthwatch's mission is the definition of participation: To engage people worldwide in scientific field research and education in order to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. Put simply, you won't be stuffing envelopes in this volunteer position! In 2009, the organization will sponsor more than 120 eco-friendly research projects in 38 countries and 20 U.S. states, focusing on climate change, oceans, ecosystem services and cultural heritage. Armchair scientists, this is your call to action!

Earth Day Activities and Volunteering at Earthwatch Institute

Crazy for crocs? From now until August you can hop aboard Earthwatch Institute's Crocodiles of the Zambezi conservation mission taking place in the heart of Zambia's exotic Zambezi River system. There, you'll work alongside researchers to wrangle the reptiles for the sole purpose of protecting them. Duties include measuring and tagging the crocs along with collecting vital data and spreading the word to local communities and schools so they understand the importance of crocodiles.

Bike for the Birds: If catching crocs isn’t so your speed, slow things down this May, June, or July with a simply stunning escape to Southern France where you can bicycle through Provence in an attempt to protect the threatened European roller bird. Duties include assisting the research team with capturing and weighing birds, planting trees and analyzing bird behavior. Now that's something to gawk about!
