If exotic travel and scientific research gets your blood moving, then this might be the Earth Day activity for you. Earth watch Institute matches up volunteer travelers with field researchers who need hands-on help. You'll pay your own way, but it'll be worth every penny when you experince nature—and lend a hand—like you've never done before.
Earthwatch's mission is the definition of participation: To engage people worldwide in scientific field research and education in order to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. Put simply, you won't be stuffing envelopes in this volunteer position! In 2009, the organization sponsored more than 120 eco-friendly research projects in 38 countries and 20 U.S. states, focusing on climate change, oceans, ecosystem services and cultural heritage. Armchair scientists, this is your call to action!
Earth Day Activities and Volunteering at Earthwatch Institute
Enter the Amazon: Join Peruvian biologists on board the research vessel Clavero for a trip through the Amazon River Basin, where you'll help survey populations of dolphins, monkeys, macaws, turtles, and other local species during daytime canoe trips and night-time searches.
Brave the Bay: Want to stay closer to home? Earthwatch also offers trips throughout North America, including one to Barnegat Bay in New Jersey, where you'll help capture, tag, and track diamondback terrapins, a local turtle. And if you wind up on one of the later teams, you'll get to monitor the turtles' for successful hatching.
