Celebrate Earth Day's 40th Anniversary with TreeHugger.

40 years ago, Earth Day was conceived as an annual event to inspire awareness and appreciation of the environment. Since then, we have come to realize that Earth Day—or is it Earth Month—should, indeed, be every day. Still, even the most hardcore environmentalists have to admit that if a celebration can motivate people who have become tired of "green"—or perhaps would never even notice otherwise—to take notice of the challenges the planet faces, then it has significant value.

Remember: Earth Day isn't just every day, it's today, too. That's why TreeHugger is rounding up activities across the country and covering the biggest celebrations—today and through the weekend.
