Wearing Sustainability on Your Sleeve

Wed May 14, 2008 08:33 AM ET

According to author and self-help guru Stephen F. Covey, one of the 7 foundational habits of highly effective people is thinking win-win; thinking win-win is also one of the working mantras of sustainability. Indeed today many of us want to live more sustainable, more eco-friendly lives, but we want to look good too. Not only are both things simultaneously possible, but it is often the case that some of the most stylish, trendy, comfortable and generally sought-after apparel is manufactured using environmentally sound, organic and otherwise earth-friendly materials and methods. Here are 5 great clothing and accessory ideas to make you look and feel great.

  • The Bentwood Coffee Cuff: Picture, if you will, this scene: early in the morning, New York Times in hand, you drowsily walk to your favorite, local mom and pop coffee shop and order your favorite blend of fair-trade organic. The barista offers you a sleeve for your coffee, (lest your burn yourself and ruin this beautiful day you've setup) but you decline-you carry your sleeve with you. These fashionable, feel-good-on-the-skin Bentwood Coffee Cuffs double up as a go-with-everything, everyday bangle and skin-protecting coffee sleeves. What's not to love?
  • Dog Leash meets Necktie: You love your dog. You used to love your necktie. Your dog would look great sporting your old necktie. That's sort of the idea behind these recycled silk necktie turned dog leashes. Made from 100 percent recycled silk neckties and renewable cotton webbing, these strong, masculine and--let's be honest--kind of weird dog leashes are perfect for the man/dog with everything.
  • Boy Beater Tank: The tank top has become a wardrobe staple not only as an undershirt, but also as a go-to layering devise or quick de facto summer shirt option. These 100 percent organic Boy Beater tanks feature a wider-than-normal rib and are available in two wear-with-anything colors—white and natural.
  • Ace Red Vegetarian Shoes: There are lots of different ways a shoe (or lots of things) can be thought of us as sustainable. One way is to take the cow out of the equation, as New York based Moo Shoes has done. These wear anywhere bright red shoes are comfortable and mold to your feet, but they're also chic and attractive-a perfect summer shoe.
  • Recycled Confetti Small Clutch: That little black dress looks great, really it totally does, but perhaps a pop of color is in order? This made in Mexico fair trade clutch is made from 100 percent recycled candy wrappers—it's bright, fun, quirky and totally stylish. Great for day or night, this bag makes an awesome conversation piece!
