That's right—the city chopped down 56 trees to make space for, um, Fashion Week. The Daily News reports that while the Parks Department said the trees were 'declining' anyway, landscape architects say they were in good condition, especially considering their urban environment.
The story quotes an anonymous architect who said the trees were stressed from lack of water: "You don't destroy them," the source said. "You water them."
You'd hope that attitude would already be ingrained in a city with a mission to plant and care for a million trees.
More from the Daily News story:
The chopping and ripping happened six months ago, when the site had already been picked as the location of Fashion Week, which kicked off Thursday.
Councilwoman Gale Brewer, whose Manhattan district includes Damrosch Park, said Parks Department officials told her they were going to remove the London Plane trees "in part because of Fashion Week - for the tents."Department spokeswoman Vickie Karp described the mass arborcide this way: "56 declining trees were removed, many from planters, and 11 healthy trees were transplanted.
Looks like it doesn't go without saying that needless destruction of the city's already-sparse greenery isn't a great idea, and should be added to the list of green changes we'd like to see for Fashion Week.
