It's no surprise that organic cotton is tons better for the planet than regular cotton because regular cotton is treated with all sorts of chemicals and pesticides. In fact, cotton is treated with more harmful chemicals than any other crop. These chemicals wreak havoc on our eco-system and cause harm to those that wear them. But what about the other green fabrics out there? Today the choices are growing at lightning speed. Here are some of the latest in eco-chic fabrics:

  • Soy fiber is all the rage this season. Often called vegetable cashmere, it's a little more expensive than organic cotton. Make sure the soy used to make the fabric is grown organically as well. While it's less harmful than many frighteningly processed fabrics that use tons of fossil fuels in production, organic is always better. This stuff is super soft to the touch and a great choice for those one of a kind pieces that you won't be wearing everyday.

  • While silk should be an eco-friendly product in its natural state, that's often not the case. It's commonly not because of all the chemicals used in production. Eco tek silks are designated to be an eco-friendly silk and used by renowned green designer, Linda Loudermilk in her stunning designs.

  • Milk fabric is one of the coolest fabrics I've seen in a while. What will they think of next? It's really just that, milk. Liquid milk is dried and its proteins are then extracted. The separated proteins are then dissolved in a chemical solution and placed into a machine that spins the fibers together like cotton candy. A pillow of soft silky fabric is the byproduct of it.
