On a recent trip to the southern hemisphere, world renowned eco-model and Planet Green personality Summer Rayne Oakes took time to chat with New Zealand's TV 3 News. Some of the topics that came up, like sludge and sewage, were a bit surprising.
Most people would agree that there's nothing sexy about investigating "sludge health incidents" and measuring "organic compounds in sewage sludge." Summer Rayne Oakes, the world's first "eco-model," disagrees. After graduating from Cornell, she authored research papers on just these topics and came to realize that the fibers in our clothes had a major impact on the environment.
This realization led her to begin a campaign to green the fashion industry. Summer Rayne Oakes explains that she "was seeing the connections between waste management, the fact stuff grows from fibre— we grow our clothes, to what we put on our body…it's not just a good industry to comment on but to green-up on along the way." The recent publication of her book, Style, Naturally and regular speaking engagements allow her to spread the word and target those that might not otherwise be interested in her eco-message.
And the message is spreading. Check out this interview with New Zealand's TV 3 News.
