Valentine's Day is right around the corner. And I'm not excited. Sure, I'm not thrilled about the holiday because I'm single (and if you're single, I'm sure you feel equally as singled out by this holiday), but more importantly: what a wasteful holiday this is! Essentially birthed (as we know it) from greeting card companies, this holiday rides on waste. We're made to believe we have to exchange cards, candies, balloons, and lots of other treats in order to celebrate it.
Well, I'm against what we're "made to believe."
If you're single and want to enjoy your Valentine's Day your way, the eco-way, follow my instructions:
- Buy or make some eco-candles
These candles can be soy or beeswax. Pick your favorite color and scent—think only about yourself. Buy or make some eco-bath salt and bath bubbles. Complement this with eco-bath products. Give yourself a long, luxurious, relaxing bath. You may even want to meditate a little. - Buy or make some eco-chocolates
Making something sweet yourself is easier than you may think, but there are also some great chocolate companies out there worth supporting. Stuff your face with this goodness before, during, and after a delicious eco-dinner. Pair that with some eco-wine and you'll be good to go. - Ditch the movie theater
Movie theaters are mass producers of waste. Instead, rent a movie, read a book, go for a long walk...the options are endless. - Put on some eco-pajamas
Get something really comfortable. I'm talking about organic silk or beautiful hemp. Something sustainable but still great enough to be considered a present to yourself. - Get a good night's sleep
Do whatever you have to to ensure a memorable night's rest for yourself. Wake up feeling accomplished! Your Valentine's Day, should it follow instructions like these, will have a much smaller footprint than most others'.
