Serious sewers use a lot of fabric. Whether you're making a quilt or an apron or even a little pincushion, you can use scraps of fabric to cut down on waste (and expense!). But one sewing queen isn't willing to throw away a single scrap—especially not the selvedge.*
Vintage Ric-Rac is a fantastic blog by an Australian woman named Jodie who uses the selvedge for everything from dresses to key rings—she has even used them to upholster a chair.
The effect is quite striking and stunning, and her website includes detailed instructions on a ton of sewing projects that use often-discarded items. There are tape measure coin purses, button rings, and more.
If you like her work but can't work a sewing machine to save your life (or just don't have the time), Jodie sells items on Etsy under ricracssews.
*For those who don't know, the selvedge is the strip along the side of your piece of fabric that often is white or cream in color and usually bears the name of the designer or company, as well as samples of the colors used in the material.
