Chlorine isn't exactly green. Neither is your standard swimming pool or hot tub. But that's doesn't mean you'll never sink into these waters again. In fact, I recently got in a hot tub for the first time in what feels like ages. With all environmental repercussions of hot tubs, pools, and chlorine aside, I noticed that my hair was inconveniently brittle after drying off from the hot tub. It reminded me of the mangled and shiny sun-kissed hair I had in the summers as a kid. You know, back when my mom had to force me to brush my hair. But that's not the kind of hair I want as an adult. And I don't want to have to avoid pools and hot tubs forever and ever or buy expensive deep conditioners to fix this problem. Buying brand new hair products poses a lot of environmental problems. With each new product we buy, we're dealing with production and transportation pollution. And with hair products, we're often dealing with a lot of unnatural chemicals.

So if you have that brittle chlorine-damaged hair, repair it without buying anything at all. Use baking soda or club soda. If you have either one of these common products in your home already, rinse your hair with them after a dip in a pool or lounging-session in a hot tub. They'll keep your hair from getting brittle and mangled.

Of course pools and hot tubs aren't the greenest everyday activities. But for the here and there times that you do find yourself in one, make sure you handle your damaged hair the green way: with the non-toxic stuff you already have.
