Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Those are the instructions on the side of the shampoo bottle. They aren't the best of instructions. For instance, a really dumb guy may think that he has to repeat the process until the shampoo is gone. The shampoo companies probably like dumb guys like that. Those dumb guys use a bottle of shampoo during every shower. Those of us interested in environmental matters probably aren't so happy with the hypothetical dumb guys. Shampoo generates packaging waste and there are all sorts of concerns about the chemicals in shampoo and what happens to those chemicals when they go down the drain, so using less of it would be preferable. Here are some tips on how to reduce your shampoo use.

  1. Shorter Hair
The less hair you have, the less shampoo you are going to use.

  2. Don't Wash Your Hair Every Day
You don't need to wash your hair every day. You don't even need to bathe every day.

  3. A Little Dab Will Do You
The recommended amount is a quarter-sized dollop. You don't need a handful.

  4. Don't Repeat
You don't need to repeat. It's okay to bend the rules on the bottle.

  5. Dilute Shampoo
When the shampoo bottle is half empty, refill it with water. The shampoo will be thinner. Be careful not to use more because of this.

  6. Store Top-Side Down
If you don't like water-thinned shampoo, then your shampoo is going to be very viscous to the very last. Make sure to get at that very last by storing your shampoo upside down.

  7. Make Your Own Hole
    From Why Not:

To make your shampoo last much longer simply pierce a small hole in the lid of the bottle and instead of opening the lid just squeeze or shake the shampoo out, you'll be amazed at how long it will last.
