When I was in 3rd grade I used a shoestring, some paperclips and a penny to make a necklace for my mom. I just knew she would wear it with pride to all her formal functions. Unfortunately, the day I gave it to her was the last time I saw my precious creation. Perhaps she didn’t know that one day it would be fashionable to wear repurposed materials as jewelry. Though mom wasn’t on the cutting edge, today environmentally conscious companies are creating functional works of art from discarded items.
Since 2004, Miami-based design company, Ecoist, has been using candy wrappers, billboard signs, soda can pull tabs, and subway maps to make some fabulously interesting accessories. The 100% hand made items are created from misprinted or discontinued product labels. Ecoist works with manufacturers to obtain these “useless” materials before they are shipped to landfills. The partnership essentially turns one company’s trash into another company’s treasure.
The handbags, jewelry, and various other accessories are not only environmentally friendly, but fashion forward. The unique designs and variety of colors makes a simple satchel a showpiece! Their jewelry line is spectacular as well. The recycled glass earrings and repurposed label bracelets put my paperclip necklace to shame. And if that isn’t enough, for every bag you purchase, Ecoist plants a tree.
