No, not that kind of green! (Tho my oldest did do hers magenta last year--not too environmental!) But 'tis the season to updo, and if you want to help your daughter go easy on the eyes and the environment, you might want to try some totally unplugged primping from green hair guru Katherine Semke, proprietor of Westchester's famed eco-salon, Katherine Winters in Irvington, New York.

Here she reintroduces us to what our great grandmothers did to get soft, opulent tresses:

How to get green rag curls

Rag curls create soft cascading curls that will last all night. Here is a great alternative to an old-but-new-again prom look without the electric curlers and curling iron. You'll want to do this the night before your event since you're counting on Mother Nature to dry it.

  1. Make a sugar water setting lotion--2 spoonfuls to 6 oz water in a spray bottle.
  2. Spray wet hair with the mixture.
  3. Take an old sheet and cut into strips an inch wide by 6 inches long.
  4. Section off hair into inch chunks of hair. (Don't be to precise because it will look too even.)
  5. Take the hair and roll it into the strip and then tie it up. You can sleep on this it is so soft and when you wake up--voila!--beautiful curls.
  6. Take a test curl to make sure it is dry.
