For the DIYers among us, knowing where to find eco-friendly fabrics for crafting and sewing projects is essential. The more we can support green and sustainable fabrics, the faster we can help transform the textile industry's impact on the environment.

The conventional textile industry uses huge amounts of cotton and, proportionally speaking, even huger amounts of pesticides. In addition, the textile industry is the second thirstiest industry worldwide, relying heavily on unsustainable irrigation methods. Finally, conventional textile production methods discharge toxic chemicals into the environment, including massive amounts of dioxins, one of the world's top pathogens.

Fortunately, there's a fast-growing contingent of green fabric manufacturers and suppliers committed to revolutionizing the way fabrics are produced. Finding those companies has never been easier. Here's a trio of great source lists to get you started.

Organic and Eco-Friendly Fabric Source Lists

The O'Mama Report's list of sources for organic fabrics is a good place to start getting familiar with suppliers and prices.

Then there's the source list over at Tiny Decor, a blog dedicated to "creating naturally modern nurseries." Tiny Decor's list focuses on the top ten sources for modern and eco-friendly fabrics. The photos of the various fabric selections are wonderful, with a focus on hand-made craftsmanship and artistry.

Global Sources, on the other hand, offers a more extensive and comprehensive round-up of organic fabric manufacturers with contact information and web links for your continued research.

Happy Sewing!
