Instead of stressing about your tresses this summer, take a few preventative measures to ensure that your hair’s health stays strong so that you can focus on having fuss-free fun in the sun.

Color-treated hair tends to suffer the most from the summer elements like the sun, salt water, and chlorinated pools. Forget about walking around with a dull, dry mop atop your head. We turned to Kacey Welch, colorist and extension specialist at The Neil George Salon in Beverly Hills who said that, although the best way to extend your hair color when spending time in the sun is to “wear a cute hat,” you can also show off your coif by protecting it as opposed to concealing it.

Pool Prep
Especially when spending time in chlorine, Kacey says that “it’s always a good idea to protect your hair by wetting it down with fresh water and spraying it with a leave-in conditioner before going in the pool.” Put olive oil or coconut oil in your hair before getting in the water to create a shield. Better yet, go in hair-safer salt water pools instead of those with chemicals that are both bad for your hair and the environment.

Dry Shampoo
More than exposure, one major issue when it comes to summertime activities is having to blow dry and style hair after. Instead of washing your hair daily, Kacey suggests using a dry shampoo. “When the hair is dirty you can just spray the roots, comb though and the dry shampoo picks up any oil or sweat. You can go 3 or 4 days without washing your hair (which also minimizes water use- more green). Especially if you have extensions (another summer hair secret), dry shampoo will save you!”

Extend Your Hair
So are extensions the way to go during the summer? According to Kacey, absolutely! “The best thing about having extensions is the natural wave to the hair. Allowing the extensions to air dry is an easy way to embody that simply pretty beachy look. Anything to avoid having to blow dry your hair in the summer heat is the best!”
