How to Make Organic Soap at Home

Lots of new natural products on the market make it easy to make your own soap at home.

I haven't tried to make my own soap since a 10th grade chemistry lab left me with a slimy brick that smelled faintly of the Bath & Body Works lilac spray I'd poured in for scenting. But with all my new green initiatives, it looks like cobbling together a bar in my kitchen might not be as hard as I remember.

I can start with a melt-and-pour base (like these—there's even one made with organic palm and coconut oils) and literally follow the instructions in the name, melting it in the microwave and pouring it into molds, adding essential oils (instead of that body spray). Of course, if you're up for even more of a challenge, try making yours from scratch—and know you're leaving out the harmful chemicals and fragrance that leave you feeling dirty.
