Fashion is an ever changing art, and oftentimes, we like to follow the lead of our favorite celebrities on Hollywood Green and use ourselves as a canvas. Being in style, more often than not, requires a certain willingness to evolve with fashion. Sure, fashion is a functional art, but the pollution and waste of clothes stuck in the back of our closet after they're "out of style" isn't always great for the functioning of our planet.
Taking material from the farm or forest and transforming it into stylish clothing is not a simple process. The creation of clothing requires utilizing all sorts of growth chemicals and toxic dyes in many cases. Luckily, many designers are starting to tailor their designs in a much more eco-friendly manner. Nonetheless, there are basic ways to stretch out the life span of your own wardrobe as not to help raise production rates. Here are some tips:
- THINK BEFORE YOU BUY. It is fun to buy clothing spontaneously, but try to avoid buying items that you know will be out of style next season.
- BUY FROM VINTAGE/THRIFT STORES . One man's trash is another man's treasure! Vintage looks are back now more than ever. Take advantage of this and shop for used clothes. You'll have a unique look all while helping out the environment.
- TAKE CARE OF YOUR CLOTHES. Of course you're going to need new clothes if you abuse the ones you have. Follow the directions on the clothing care tags, plus hang dry whenever possible. If you've only worn something for a few hours, don't fear the sniff test. If it checks out okay, hang the garment back in the closet instead of throwing it in the wash pile. If you utilize these basic rules, you'll find that you'll find the need to purchase new clothes less frequently.
- DON'T BE AFRAID TO MODIFY YOUR CLOTHES. Before you decide to get rid of an item of clothing for good, consider modifying it. Ladies: It's easy to transform a basic t-shirt into a summery halter top with just a pair of scissors. Guys: Cut offs for guys are back in style now. Try it out before you toss those ripped pants!
- BUY ORGANIC. Products that are better for the environment do exist. Support them!
Clothing production does have a toll on the environment, so think about what you wear.
