Miley Cyrus may be becoming more green these days, especially with her new single about saving the planet, but she's not the only member of her generation trying to make a difference. More and more tweens and teens alike are doing their part to put their feet down about all things green. This is awesome because they're all the future of our country. However, there is one little thing about the tween and teen industries that doesn't exactly cater to an eco-friendly initiative. You know what that one thing is? STUFF.
Miley Cyrus fans find themselves buying all sorts of Miley gear...things you probably couldn't have thought up in your wildest dreams. I'm not just talking about your standard cds, shirts, and posters. I'm talkin' about 3D glasses, lamps, necklaces, dolls, edible cake images, scripts, wallets, purses, etc. If you can think it, you can probably buy it when it comes down to Miley Cyrus.
So what's the problem?
Well, all of this stuff plays a big role in hurting the environment when it comes down to production and manufacturing. Think about all of the trees that are killed in the printing of those scripts alone! The worst part is that most tweens and teens quickly grow out of their favorite artists.
As a parent, older sibling, uncle, aunt, mentor, teacher...or ANYone older in a position to influence these young people, there are some suggestions you can offer up as alternatives to products like these that can help do a lot of good for the planet.
Tips to be a Greener Tween Fan:
- Don't throw 3D glasses out. More and more 3D movies are coming out these days. Hang onto them for the next movie.
- Print pictures, scripts, etc. yourself from home on the back of scrap paper.
- Turn your old necklaces and earrings into cool new ones that sport a favorite artist or team instead of buying them new. This can be as simple as gluing an image down to a piece of metal!
- Challenge kids to turn their old dolls into dolls to replicate their favorite artists. Give them paint and fabric to make new clothes with.
Pushing the kids in your life to be more green as fans will also push them to be more creative. Just think about it!
