Going green, or at least greener, is as much about being conscious as anything else. Asking where a product came from or how it was made leads to a lot of interesting changes in the way we shop, eat, drive, live. Just think of the recent frenzy over lead in toys, and the questions that raised.
It turns out heightened consciousness leads to greater weight loss, too. So says an attention-worthy study published in the August issue of American Journal of Preventive Medicine, in which researchers found that all it takes to double your weight loss is to keep track of everything you eat by writing it down in a food diary.
The study, which encouraged participants to use a variety of weight loss strategies, followed about 1,700 overweight or obese adults. Participants spanned the country and included men and women and White and African American subjects in nearly equal proportions. The study’s senior investigator went so far as to say that the most successful weight-loss method used by the study participants was "hands-down" the food diary. In fact, those who kept one lost twice as much weight as those who didn’t.
But recording every bite was only the beginning. It was through the increased awareness and consciousness gained through tracking, observing, analyzing, and reflecting on their eating habits that the study’s participants were able to change their habits, their diets, and ultimately their weights, for the better.
