Brace yourself: Tomorrow marks the official start of holiday shopping season. We know it's hard to wake up from your turkey coma and drag yourself out to the nearest mall to fight the crowds for sale-priced loot-especially when that loot is not made with the most eco-friendly materials and processes. But still, don't depend on online shopping; though it sounds like the easiest way to green your Black Friday footprint-no driving, no impulse buys, no must-have-caffeine stops-take into account how far the gifts travel to get to your door, and you might not be saving any carbon after all.
Go over your list and see which items really aren't available in stores-like that autographed baseball card your dad's always wanted-and which you might be able to find at a local store. And think outside the list. So your nephew wants a stack of brand new DVD's? Consider Netflix or another product service system instead; chances are, he can watch them all in three months for less than the cost of buying just two. You can also rent tools for dad and handbags for mom; throw in some homemade (organic!) cookies, and sit back and enjoy the holidays.
