So you've made the switch to all natural body wash? Good for you—the fewer chemicals you use, the better. But take a closer look at your shower: are you cancelling out that eco-friendly soap with a $2 plastic loofah sponge from the drugstore? Come on. You can do better. Try a scrubber made from loofah (which is a vine-grown vegetable that, in its natural state, looks like a cross between an eggplant and a zucchini) for working up a lather and exfoliating at the same time. The greenest way to do this is to grow your own, let it dry out, and then cut and sew the edges together—as in this tutorial. But if you're limited by space (or lack of a green thumb), there are plenty of vegan, biodegradable options on the shelves: Earthscreen.com offers loofahs in round, rectangular, and oval shapes, but we especially love the sweet, brightly colored duck, fish, and food-shaped ones at Green and Greener—all of which are colored with vegetable dyes.
And if you're a person who just can't feel clean after washing with a vegetable, we won't judge you. Just make sure to get a plastic sponge made from recycled materials like this one from the Body Shop, which re-uses old plastic bottles.
