Jewelry trends come and go, but I always like big earrings—no matter what's in style. Luckily for me, big earrings have been in style for a while now. It seems like no matter where I find myself in New York, some girl's ears, besides my own, are being weighed down with something chunky and outrageous. This is all fine by me—especially because I can make earrings as big as I want from the many lids and bottle caps I have lying around the house. Since bottles and jars need to be recycled without lids, I always save my lids and caps. And when I get a chance, I make earrings out of them. You can, too.
Here's how to make earrings from lids:

Find some lids. I chose giant peanut butter lids, masochistically. (Hey, the bigger the better. Even if they hurt a little at the end of the night).

Punch holes through the top of the lids. A really good way to do this is with heat. I lit the end of a wooden skewer on fire and melted the holes that way.

Find an image you like for the front of your earrings. I found an image from an old magazine. Press that image around the lid and cut out the circle that creates. Glue the images onto the lids.

Attach earring hooks to the lids. This is easily done. You can buy earring hooks at any craft store, like Michael's. One pack will make over a dozen earrings in most cases. To help your earrings dangle, you may want to attach the hooks to a chain first and string that chain through the holes like I did. You'll need a small jewelry plier for all of this. Those can also be bought at any ol' craft store.
This project is a great way to do a lot of green things. You'll help recycle your lids and see to it that your bottles and jars are recycled properly without lids. Additionally, this project is a great way to use up paper from old magazines and newspapers—all while helping you to avoid buying new earrings.
