On Hollywood Green we saw Maria Menounos show us around at Decades Two. Sure, it’s easy to be fashionable when shopping at a hip boutique like that. However, there is a huge fashion resource that is not only inexpensive and overlooked, but it is also green. What I’m talking about are thrift stores. The greenest clothes that you can buy are the ones that have already been produced. Buying used clothes requires no additional energy or materials. Plus, it’s so cheap! Thrift store finds can prove to be especially useful for a woman; the fashionista, in particular. So if you’re interested in greening up your own wardrobe by thrift shopping, but you’re not sure where to start, here are some pointers.
- Accessories. Thrift stores are wonderful for accessories. From chunky old jewelry to worn out belts and neat purses from decades before, you’re bound to find the most original accessories at a thrift stores. Also keep your eye out for scarves, sunglasses, and hats!
- Shoes. Granted, you can’t always find the most durable shoes at the thrift store. However, when you get lucky, I find, you get really lucky. Good shoes can be expensive and shopping at thrift stores will at least give you the possibility of finding great shoes for a low cost. I found a pair of $200 leather boots for $7 last week!
- Clothing. Last, but of course not least, clothing is what you’ll primarily be finding at thrift stores. I always find that the key is to look for items that look good when they appear to be vintage. For example, if you have a nice shirt at home, you might want to juxtapose that against a vest from the ‘70’s. Tight jeans can easily work with an oversized shirt from the men’s department, as well.
The key to thrift shopping really is to be creative. Take note from the many celebrities out there who have taken on vintage like it’s their job. If you can pull this off, you’ll save a ton of money and help the environment!
