DIY Organic Hair Remedies: Stop Build-up with Apple Cider Vinegar

Does residue build-up leave your hair looking dull, oily and lifeless? You're not alone. With the amount of chemicals pumped into the average shampoo or hair gel, even those with naturally dry/coarse locks are plagued with buildup from styling products.

Luckily, the solution is sitting right in your kitchen. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is a very natural and effective ingredient for removing buildup. Not only does vinegar remove product residue, but it also closes the cuticles to prevent future buildup.

Check out these simple DIY hair remedies that all use ACV- they'll clean out all that gunk and restore your hair's natural shine.

For Oily Hair
Add 1 cup of vinegar with 4 cups of hot water, and let the solution sit for a half hour. After shampooing, pour the solution onto your hair and scalp. Make sure you fully rinse it out with water.

For Dry Hair
When in the shower, pour your usual amount of shampoo into the palm of your hands and add 1 teaspoon of ACV. Then simply wash your hair with the mixture. Do this whenever your hair feels weighed down with build-up.

If your hair is on dry side, you may only need to do this once every 2-4 weeks. You'll be surprised how effective just one vinegar wash will be. Plus, too much vinegar will dry your hair out.

For Normal Hair
Wet your hair in the shower, and massage 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar onto your scalp. Then shampoo/condition as you normally would.

Hate the smell of vinegar?
If you find yourself smelling like vinegar despite how much you rinse it out with water, there are a few extra steps you can take to get rid of the stench.

  • Add a few drops of an essential oil, like lavender or rose geranium.

  • Infuse the rinse with your choice of fresh herbs or spices, like rosemary, parsley or calendula petals.

  • Check your neighborhood stores to see if they carry scented vinegar, like Sweet Plum Vinegar.
