We've written plenty of articles about the natural masks, treatments, and scrubs that will give you healthy skin, shiny hair, and soft lips-but the easiest way to kick your beauty routine into high gear is to work from the inside out, by starting with the foods you eat.
In The Beauty Diet, registered dietitian Lisa Drayer offers these suggestions for what to look for on your next trip to the market:
Seafood: Salmon is a favorite because of its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which keep skin smooth and glowing by minimizing the cell-swelling that causes wrinkles. Look for oysters, too; they're loaded with zinc, a mineral that creates collagen (no needles necessary), and gives you durable nails and nourished hair.
Fruits: The antioxidants in blueberries don't just fight disease; those, combined with the fruit's anti-inflammatory properties, stop your skin from aging before its time. Kiwi is also high in antioxidants, which may prevent cancer and heart disease, and in vitamin C-so it also helps build collagen and wage war against wrinkles. And tomatoes, like all pink and red fruits, get their color from anti-aging lycopene. Drayer suggests eating tomatoes processed-in sauce, ketchup, or tomato paste-since the lycopene will be more easily taken in by your body. Bring on the pizza!
Vegetables: Don't skip the spinach: you may not like the taste, or you might, but the benefits are unmatched. In addition to lutein (which perks up your eyes no matter how late you stayed out last night), it's full of beta carotene, vitamin C, magnesium, iron, calcium, potassium, B vitamins, zinc, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids. Sweet potatoes are another reliable source of beta-carotene, which is thought to work as a natural SPF-without the need for external application.
