Eating vegetables is one way to combat the winter doldrums (ya know, they're fresh, colorful, energizing...), but splashing them on your face can be even more fun. All you need is a cucumber, a few green lettuce leaves, a lemon, a tomato, and a blender, and you’re set to create a little dose of verdant refreshment for your face.

The ingredients (below) can be put through a juicer or pureed in a blender, and the strained and pressed to extract the juice. Vegetable juices mainly consist of water, but the water is quite different from tap water—it's full of lively cellular juices, vitamins, and emollients. Think of it as vegetable blood...for your face.

Cucumber is an emollient and a tonic, and is often used in cosmetics to lighten the color of the skin. Tomato contains vitamin A, C, and riboflavin, all of which make skin happy, healthy, and bright.

You can use the leftover cucumber for a face mask, and the leftover tomato for a cleanser.

Vegetable Toner
Adapted from Natural Beauty by Aldo Facetti:

1 cup chopped cucumber flesh
1 cup lettuce leaves
4 tablespoons lemon juice
1 cup chopped tomato

Put ingredients through a juicer, or puree in a blender and strain. Press solids to extract all liquids. Toner will keep for a few days in the refrigerator, but for maximum effectiveness, use immediately.
