You don't need a sewing machine to make this comfy green hat.

One day, not that long ago, I decided I wanted to make a beanie out of an old dress I had. With my only opportunity to sew being at my mother's house during the few days a year I'm home in West Virginia, I schemed up a way to make this beanie without sewing—and it worked. If you've got patience and some old, preferably stretchy, fabric, try turning your old fabric into this breezy summer beanie before tossing the scrap fabric.

How to make a beanie hat from scrap fabric:

1. Locate your fabric.

For this project to work smoothly, you're going to need stretchy fabric from clothing—like a dress, shirt, or pants. Cut out two sections of fabric from the mid section of a shirt or dress or from the legs of stretchy pants.

2. Slip one piece's edge inside of the other piece.

Allow for the pieces to overlap a few inches or so. Once the pieces are overlapped, cut holes through both layers of fabric around the hat. Use spare fabric to tie the two pieces together through the holes. Once the two pieces are attached this way, use the same method to bind the open ends at the top of the hat together.

3. Finish it up.

You can leave the hat the way it is at this point or you can add another layer to the hat like I did. Once you're done, enjoy!

This project is a great way to make an eco-sensible fashion accessory with otherwise useless spare fabric.
